Chapter 1 – The Trials of Elias
The void above me was vast.
Its infinite depth of boundless black, glowing, purple clouds, and endless twinkling stars reminded me of how small we really are.
There I sat, no doubt one of the most powerful initiates taking part in this time of trials, and what are we? What was even the most powerful ninja under the immense and never-ending force of The End?
We were all space dust.
We were also all vibrant, shining souls.
I am Elias.
I am Ender.
And I am ninja.
Sitting with my long legs crossed and my mighty hands relaxed on my knees, I watched as my fellow initiates passed one by one through the Trial of Evasion.
Though my mind was clear—and it had to be, for the time of my own trials was close at hand—I couldn’t help but think back to my long adventure and Seed Stride on the Overworld with my good friends. I watched an initiate—I didn’t know his name—rush and warp through the obstacle course in the arena below, and I thought of Skeleton Steve.
What was he doing?
A few days ago, after the destruction of the Doomstreak Clan ninjas that had attacked his tower to abduct him, I was ordered by my master to return to the End. In my heart, I knew that my adventures with Skeleton Steve, Slinger, Sir Zebulon, and even my Minecraftian friends—LuckyMist, Xenocide99, and WolfBroJake—could go on forever. If it was up to me, I could very well become one of those Ender that live out their entire lives on a perpetual Seed Stride, if only for my love of the mobs and people of the Overworld.
But … I am ninja. And as a member of the Order of the Warping Fist, I have a responsibility to my Order and all of Diamodia to act in accordance to the Order’s needs.
Now, I waited with several other initiates to go through my trials for promotion to the rank of lower ninja.
Honestly, this promotion was long overdue.
What seemed like many days ago, I was but an initiate ninja on my first Seed Stride, gathering Ender seeds for the dragon’s island and the growth of my people. Then, what was to be a simple training mission to solve a mysterious increase in Ender deaths around Nexus 426 transformed into a much deeper and more dangerous mission involving the Skeleton King and his army from another universe. After narrowly defeating the Skeleton King and being assigned to stay with and observe the creature that the monster had become, the situation on Diamodia grew even more dire as we (Skeleton Steve and I) discovered an alien affliction—the Glitch—spreading undetected in the dark corners of the world. Worse yet, an enemy unlike anything I’d ever seen before—monsters somehow connected with the Glitch—came for Skeleton Steve with evil, apocalyptic intent…
The Doomstreak Clan ninjas were fearsome opponents; dark Endermen of rage, stealth, and great power.
And they were still out there, working secretly on the Overworld…
As I sat comfortably in the purpur-stone seats of the arena under the open void, surrounded by other initiates and higher-ranked ninjas who came to watch, I focused on my breathing and keeping my Chi full. I recognized the sensation of fear trying to creep into my heart and my mind—fear of the coming mission against the Doomstreak Clan, and fear for Skeleton Steve and my other friends should the evil ninjas return to kidnap him while I was away—but I gave no power to this fear.
The fear would make me fail.
I must not fail.
As it was, as an initiate ninja, I was in a unique position compared to my peers. I should have gone through these trials long ago. I certainly had more experience by now in practicing my ninja skills against serious opponents and in dangerous circumstances outside of training. But promotion to the next rank was far from guaranteed.
Ego had served as my enemy before. I remembered well the folly of arrogance, and at times, I still felt the painful twinge in my torso of where I’d been pinned to the ground by a gigantic black arrow, shot by the Skeleton King and his Diabolical Warbow artifact, back when I’d gone into battle with recklessness in my heart.
Pride had blinded me before, and I was not going to let it blind me now.
Instead, under the brilliant expanse of stars and purple nebulas across the endless void, with the purpur stone of the arena steps under me and the simple energy of the endstone island below that … I tried to focus on my Chi.
The End was simple. This realm was clean.
My Chi flowed, and my pearl felt warm.
I watched—releasing one by one all of the storming thoughts of the Doomstreak Clan, Skeleton Steve, and what was to come—as the next initiate in the arena now leapt, ran, and warped his way through the obstacle course. His blue headband—blue just like mind—danced in the wind as he dashed along ledges, balance beams, and over hurdles and cliffs, all the while dodging speedy, purple fireballs launched at him from the shadows by the Master Eo-kiri and several assistants, hiding in darkness.
The initiate whose name I did not know moved efficiently at first, but after being hit by a few fireballs, he began to react more desperately; not fully in control. As he flailed, missing steps and almost falling from a ledge in his concern for the ender energy streaking toward him from all angles, he took hits from more and more fireballs.
Finally, Master Eo-kiri stopped him, calling out with his Mind Voice to us all:
“That is enough,” the trials master said. “Your evasion work is too weak. You have not mastered the Chi Dodge.”
The initiate ninja, burned by many fireballs and smoking, stood straight and openly betrayed his composure with frustration.
“I know that I can do this, master,” he replied in the collective Mind Voice. “Please allow me to begin again. I struggled because … I was distracted.”
“You are struggling to do well,” Master Eo-kiri replied, revealing himself in the shadows around the edge of the obstacle course, “because of what is inside. Your mind is not at peace. Focus on the present. Let your Chi flow. Return to the stands now. You will continue your training as an initiate and attempt your trials again another day.” He paused. “Elias!”
The trials master’s purple eyes reached me from the arena.
I stood as the failed initiate slumped in disappointment. He warped away with a puff of purple motes of ender energy.
“Yes, Master Eo-kiri?” I replied with my Mind Voice.
“Come before me for the Trial of Evasion.”
“As you wish, Master Eo-kiri.”
Zip.
Without delay, I warped down to the starting stone of the obstacle course. I felt certain that I could complete this trial. Between all of the warping around that I’d done on the Overworld and in the Nether in the last several days—usually under the stress of most intense combat—I felt confident in my ability to overcome this test. Not long ago, I would have been uncertain of my Chi Dodge—I was late in mastering that skill, myself—but I’d experienced much battle and hardship since then, using the Chi Dodge quite competently.
“Elias,” the trials master said. “Just as with the others, you are to avoid warping other than most minimally to exercise your Chi Dodge. I expect to see you demonstrate your physical skill to overcome the obstacles.”
I nodded. “I understand, master,” I said.
From the darkness of the seating around the arena, I made out the glow of a pair of green eyes among the many purple eyes of the higher-ranked ninjas. I could feel Master Ee’char watching me. Looking up at him, I gave my own master a brief bow, then I took position.
“Begin,” Master Eo-kiri said.
As soon as he said the word into my mind, I allowed my Chi to rule my body, letting my extraordinary perception guide me. My eyes became the leader of my path along the leaping stones, ledges, cliffs, and barricades, but I relied on my Chi to protect me as purple fireballs appeared from all directions.
Moving without thinking, I flipped and dodged and vaulted my way through the course, warping barely out of the way whenever a fireball flew at me from opponents unseen.
Zip. Zip. Zip.
My body was an expression of vigor; my long arms and legs propelling me along narrow, precarious paths that a Minecraftian would have had trouble with, rising and falling with the many climbs and drops. The purple bolts of ender energy streaked toward me, glaring in my vision here and there before my Chi Dodge took me a few feet to the right or left—ahead or behind—to avoid all damage.
I allowed myself to thrive.
I am the warping wind…
Then, before I anticipated it, I found myself nimbly touching down on the finishing stone, pulling my reaching arms back in then pressing my hands together before my chest.
I took a deep breath and let my Chi flow…
Then, I became aware of the obstacle course behind me, and the rows of seats and many glowing, purple eyes on me again. Turning to where I could sense the presence of Master Eo-kiri in the darkness beyond the edge of the course, I gave him a deep bow.
“Very good, Elias,” he said with his Mind Voice. “Your evasion skills and Chi Dodge are adequate. You may proceed to the Trial of Vision. Eirith! Come before me!”
Looking up at Master Ee’char’s glowing green eyes again, I gave a small nod to my master and warped back to the seats again as another initiate took his place on the starting stone.
When everyone was finished with the Trial of Evasion, the arena was transformed for the much-simpler Trial of Vision.
Zip.
As the master ninjas and their assistants carried the endstone obstacles away and set up a combat platform, another ninja suddenly warped over next to me, appearing with a burst of purple ender motes. His purple eyes met mine—his blue headband showing the same white initiate symbol of the Order as mine—and he gave me a small nod.
“Elias,” the initiate said. “May I sit next to you?”
“Sure,” I replied in his mind, motioning with one hand to the carved purpur step. “Do you know me?”
“I have heard your name discussed,” the initiate replied. “There has been talk about your involvement with the Doomstreak Clan and the Glitch. Many initiates are excited about becoming involved in saving the world. I am Eirith. I saw your Trial of Evasion, and I passed mine just after yours.”
Eirith.
I remembered the trials master calling him forth after my test was complete.
“The Doomstreak ninjas are terrible enemies,” I said. “Fighting them is not something to be excited about. It is a duty to this world.”
Eirith seemed to contemplate that for a moment.
“I apologize,” he said. “I have not been involved in the Overworld as you have been. My time as an initiate has been spent here, training. Was it frightening, fighting such monsters? I also heard about an anomaly called ‘the Skeleton King’ that you bested in battle. And that last fight with the Doomstreak Clan … one of our Order died there, didn’t they?” Eirith shook his head and looked away. I could feel embarrassment in his mind. “I apologize again for so many questions…”
“It is quite alright,” I replied. “The middle ninja Eirzon perished in the fight with the Doomstreak Clan, yes. I was there. In my travels, I have benefitted much as an initiate from many lessons; I have indeed been in many battles. Fear…?” I said, looking up into the void. “I would be lying if I said that the Doomstreak Clan ninjas did not inspire fear in my heart. I … I feel fear even now that they may return to harm or capture my friends while I am here at the trials.”
“Your friends,” Eirith said. “You made friends with mobs, and Minecraftians even? Such unique experiences you’ve had, Elias.”
“Indeed,” I replied, looking down to watch the Trial of Vision.
The next test had begun. As Eirith had been asking questions, the first of several initiates had battled middle ninjas with his headband down over his eyes, blinded. It would be another test of Chi, and I was fairly sure that I would perform well.
“Where did the Doomstreak Clan come from?” Eirith asked, also watching.
I still wasn’t sure of that answer.
If the initiates had been talking about me and my adventures and had somehow learned enough to ask these questions, then they probably knew just about as much as I did. When I came back for my trials, I had no idea that my people had been talking about me so much…
“Their origin is not yet clear,” I replied. “From what Erion told me after my master had examined the red Ender pearl from the fallen Doomstreak ninja, we may be dealing with two other universes other than our own.”
“Fascinating,” the other initiate replied.
We watched as several initiates took the ring before us, one at a time, each tasked with defending themselves from multiple attackers while blindfolded. Perhaps half of them passed the test. The others clearly did not have a strong enough grasp on opening themselves to their Chi. They relied too much on their other senses and took too many hits from the trials master’s assistants.
When my turn came, just like with the Trial of Evasion, I warped down to the platform and listened to the trials master’s instructions. Pulling my blue headband down over my eyes, I tightened it, guaranteeing my blindness, and settled into a martial arts stance that would allow me the most freedom of reaction.
Before the test began, I took several deep breaths, centering my Chi, and opening up to the Chi of the End around me.
I could feel the energy of the endstone in the ground under the arena. I could easily feel the powerful Chi of the other Endermen ninjas taking their places around me, even as they moved silently, no doubt trying to mask their movements entirely.
Preparing myself took me back to a memory of when I was defeated in mortal combat by the Skeleton King; the first time I fought him and failed. Back then, nearly dead with my Chi almost depleted, I closed my eyes as the monster threatened me to finish me—to kill me—demanding back the beacon that I had taken from the castle. Back then, I opened myself in the same way, and could feel the Skeleton King, the ground under me, the trees and skeleton army around me, and everything else, solely with my Chi.
Three opponents surrounded me without a sound.
“Begin,” Master Eo-kiri said.
Then, as the three unseen ninjas attacked with punches, kicks, and sweeps, I felt every move—sensed every foot and fist coming my way as if I could see just fine—and dodged and blocked until the master spoke again.
“Enough,” he commanded with his Mind Voice. “Elias, you have passed. You may remove your blindfold and await your next trial.”
“Yes, Master Eo-kiri,” I said, standing straight and pulling the headband from my eyes.
With a zip, I returned to my seat and watched as Eirith attempted his Trial of Vision, next up. He passed as well.
After Eirith returned to sit next to me, and we watched more initiates pass and fail the test, another Enderman suddenly warped in next to us. He appeared with an explosion of purple motes, full of rowdy energy and rambunctious vibes.
“Hey, Elias and Eirith!” the newcomer said. “You guys are pretty good! I’m Eoji-ru. I’m sure you’ve heard of me!”
Eoji-ru sat down heavily next to me, the tails of his blue headband settling messily on one broad shoulder. I could feel strong confidence pouring out of the initiate’s mind.
“Greetings, Eoji-ru,” I said. “Please join us. Thank you for the complement.”
“Have you heard of me, Elias? I’ve heard of you!”
I hadn’t.
“I’m sorry, Eoji-ru,” I said. “I have been away on my Seed Stride and on a subsequent mission for a long time.”
“Ah, yeah, I understand that!” he replied with a mental laugh. This initiate gave me a feeling much more like a natural Enderman instead of the Ender of the Order. His emotions were powerful and … raw. “Well I heard you’re quite the fighter, Elias! I’m really looking forward to the Trial of Combat! Are you? I can’t wait to fight you! I’m sure I’m going to come out on top in that one.”
I nodded, exchanging a quick glace with Eirith. “Perhaps,” I said.
“Elias has a lot of combat experience on the Overworld,” Eirith said. “He’s fought the Doomstreak Clan.”
“Yeah, I know!” Eoji-ru replied with loud mirth in his Mind Voice. “I can’t wait! I’ve spent all of my time here training for battle. I’m going to be the best! Well,” he said, standing again and clapping his hands. “I’m sure that I am the strongest fighter here, but … we’ll see, won’t we?”
Looking up, I nodded at him. “Indeed. We shall see.”
With that, Eoji-ru zipped away, leaving us in a shower of purple motes.
The remaining initiates finished the blindfolded test. Then, Master Eo-kiri announced the Trial of Combat. He began calling down initiates in pairs—those that hadn’t already failed their trials, anyway—and they began fighting on the same platform that we’d all just used for the Trial of Vision.
I watched as the first two initiates called were instructed to battle against each other in single combat, full force, as Master Eo-kiri stood at the edge of the structure to watch. Several matches took place afterwards—one even involving an initiate that I’d already seen win a previous bout—before the trials master called my name.
“Elias and Eover,” he said in the collective Mind Voice.
With a zip, I warped down to one side of the fighting platform. The initiate named Eover warped to the other side. Through my Chi, I could feel that the other initiate was very intimidated. I supposed that he had heard of me and my exploits as well.
Eover took an aggressive stance. Sinking into a deep, defensive pose, I raised my fists and centered my Chi.
“Ready,” I said.
“Ready,” Eover echoed.
“Fight!” Master Eo-kiri said.
My opponent immediately leapt into a flying kick—perhaps throwing his strongest attack at me in the beginning—aiming to plow right through my defenses and strike my chest. Just before Eover landed his powerful blow, however, I warped barely to one side, striking him on the kicking leg and one hip as he flew by, knocking him flat onto the platform.
He landed with a loud grunt, using his natural voice.
Once Eover leapt back to his feet, he moved to attack again, rushing me with great speed. I felt the deceptive energy in his Chi, though, and as he suddenly zipped behind me instead, I spun and landed a powerful palm strike on his chest.
My blow was enough to knock Eover off balance, and before he recovered, I spun and connected an even more powerful roundhouse kick to the same spot, launching him off of the platform.
As Eover crashed to the arena floor, recovering quickly and zipping back up onto the platform, pouring off energy of embarrassment and shame, Master Eo-kiri raised his hands.
“Elias is the victor,” he said.
After sharing a bow with Eover, we both warped back to our seats.
Several more matches played out before I realized that the trials master was using some sort of bracket system in his head to rank all of us combatants. Eventually, I was called to fight again, placed against another initiate who I’d seen win in two matches already.
I won that match just as handily as did when I’d fought Eover, then, I returned to my seat.
The Trial of Combat was much longer than the other trials, especially with most involved initiates being called to return to fight again and again. Eventually, I saw the pattern clearly, and after winning two more matches myself, I began to see the field narrow until only a few of us remained. When most initiates had been eliminated, I found myself, Eirith, and the obnoxious Eoji-ru among the top combatants, along with a few more initiates that I did not know.
When Eirith and I were both called down to fight each other, we stood, exchanged glances, then warped down to the platform together.
“I am honored to spar with you, Elias,” Eirith said, facing off across from me. He bowed.
“Thank you, Eirith,” I replied, also bowing. “The honor is mine.”
“Fight!” the trials master said.
Eirith was definitely competent. He seemed to be in tune with his Chi, and was quick and strong. I knew within a few exchanged blows, however, that my experience would win out, and I did my best to take him down. My awareness and warping was superior, so I used my agility in space to my advantage, dodging my opponent every time he came at me with a strike or combination. For every blow that Eirith landed on me, I struck him three or four times, and eventually, he tired. At one point, I was able to sweep his legs, and—as he stumbled—I delivered a powerful kick to his body that knocked him from the platform.
“Elias is the victor!” Master Eo-kiri said.
Eirith warped back to the platform and stood before me, defeated. He took a deep breath, pressed his palms together, and bowed.
“Well done, Elias,” he said with his Mind Voice.
“Thank you,” I replied, bowing. “You were a worthy opponent, Eirith.”
We warped back to our seats and watched as Eoji-ru fought next. He overwhelmed his opponent and pounded him senseless with brute force until the initiate yielded.
After another match between two others, my name was called once more.
“Elias and Eoji-ru,” Master Eo-kiri said.
“Good luck, Elias,” Eirith said.
I turned to him, nodded, then warped down to the platform.
Eoji-ru appeared on the other side in a burst of ender motes, flexing and brimming with overconfidence. I could feel his strength. I could also feel his arrogance, and a sort of greed about facing off with me.
The battle-obsessed initiate was way too interested in glory.
I’d fought brutish opponents before. The Doomstreak ninjas were extremely powerful, but they were also fast, savage, and made full use of warping trickery and shadows. The Skeleton King fought a lot like Eoji-ru, relying on brute strength and toughness to succeed. The Skeleton King had defeated me once, then I’d defeated him later, though it was with the help of the magical beacon. I’d bested that monster with speed and intelligence, but … there was no beacon here. It was my skill against Eoji-ru’s…
Could I have beat the Skeleton King in our second battle without the help of the beacon?
Maybe.
I didn’t truly know.
Eoji-ru would use an aggressive stance and likely attack me relentlessly, relying on his strength and endurance, counting on absorbing all of my strikes until he could take me down.
Like with Eover, I adopted a defensive pose.
“Ready,” I said.
“Ready!!” Eoji-ru said. I could feel his energy intensify.
Taking a deep breath, I centered on my Chi, opening up to my connection with the world around me to keep out of harm’s way. I felt the Chi of the End, the trials master, and my opponent pulsing all around me…
“Fight!” Master Eo-kiri said.
Eoji-ru immediately charged. He roared in his natural Ender voice as he did, which surprised me. Emotion poured off of him like fire. He was a tower of power, coming at me with large fists ready and eager…
